The Films That Shaped It

Dune: Part Two

2024 · Denis Villeneuve · East Asian Cinema

Denis Villeneuve cited Kurosawa's mastery of framing large groups of people within epic landscapes as the direct visual blueprint for the Fremen massing in the deep desert. Kurosawa understood that you could show hundreds of people and maintain absolute visual clarity about their placement and intention. Dune: Part Two learned this lesson obsessively. Seven Samurai is available on Criterion Channel.

We watched Ran, we watched Apocalypse Now, for their immersive power, for their sense of scope and how they plunge the audience into the perspective of a character that is confronting the horror of war. And that was very much something that I wanted to capture for this film.
