I mean, a film like All That Heaven Allows, that Fassbinder remade in Fear Eats the Soul, is a very explicit political film. It’s about women being trapped by expectations, by rules, by class. That’s what melodrama has always been about, in the way that I perceive it and have tried to reinvent it.
