The Films That Shaped It

Kill Bill Vol. 1

2003 · Quentin Tarantino · East Asian Cinema

Kill Bill is a love letter written in blood. Tarantino didn't invent the female revenge epic — he inherited it from Toshiya Fujita's Lady Snowblood, a 1973 Japanese film whose plot, visual style, and snow-drenched violence he lifted almost wholesale. The anime sequence is pure Kinji Fukasaku. The Crazy 88 fight owes everything to Bruce Lee. Tarantino's genius was understanding that these films deserved a Western audience — and that the best way to introduce them was to make something that sent people looking.
