The Films That Shaped It

Louder Than Bombs

2015 · Joachim Trier · European Cinema

Tarkovsky's Mirror fractured memory into layers—newsreel, family photograph, dream, voice-over—until the boundary between personal and historical dissolved. Trier inherited this collapse. In Louder Than Bombs, the death of a famous photographer forces her son to assemble her life from fragments: images, conversations with strangers, his own subjective distortions. The film refuses to resolve into a coherent biography. Instead, like Tarkovsky, it becomes a meditation on time's texture and the impossibility of really knowing anyone.
