Her film *Wendy and Lucy* and *Old Joy* I saw right around the time I made my first film, *Medicine for Melancholy*. And I just saw how she used place and space and people and didn’t create narratives. She just allowed these elements to exist with one another and then found the narrative in the way that they existed with one another. I thought, 'Oh my God, that’s so powerful,' and she continues to do it.
