The Films That Shaped It

Rango

2011 · — · World Cinema

Gore Verbinski architected Rango as a love letter to Italian Spaghetti Westerns, specifically Sergio Corbucci's Django and Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Verbinski studied Leone's framing—the extreme close-ups on eyes, the way tension is built through silence and proximity—and Corbucci's use of the town itself as moral geography. The stranger arriving to reshape a dying community is pure Leone. Rango maps this onto an animated world, but the DNA is unmistakably Italian Western.
