I called up Brad Bird after I saw Ratatouille and said, 'How’d you do the food in Ratatouille?’ And he gave me a whole bunch of details on how they approached it. I just thought it was really beautifully done, the food in that movie, and a good model for this.

I remember one shot in particular in Truffaut's Stolen Kisses (1968) where the camera pans across a street, and there's like 20 different things happening, but nothing's particularly highlighted. That kind of layered reality was something we wanted to achieve.
