James Mangold explicitly built this film around Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo (1961), which literally means "The Bodyguard." A masterless wandering samurai arrives in a corrupt town and must choose whose side to take—this is Logan's journey in Japan. Kurosawa's treatment of the lone warrior moving through a society in moral collapse became the structural blueprint.
