The first time I saw it, it completely changed the way I looked at movies. It was huge for me. The idea of taking the crime-film genre and twisting it in ways it shouldn't be twisted—that really informed my work. I wouldn’t have made Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction if not for films like Band of Outsiders, Shoot the Piano Player and Breathless.

Truffaut was a big influence on me. He showed me that you could make a film your own way, mixing genres, being funny, sad, romantic and completely original.

Shoot the Piano Player made a huge impression on me, the way it combined elements of noir, comedy, and pathos so effortlessly. It gave me permission to be equally free with my own narratives.
