Chaplin worked extensively with Mack Sennett at Keystone Studios and perfected the physical comedy and pantomime style that Sennett pioneered.

Keaton emerged from the same silent comedy tradition that Sennett established, creating deadpan slapstick that built directly upon Keystone's innovative approach to visual gags.

Capra directed many of Sennett's comedy shorts and learned the fast-paced editing and comedic timing that became hallmarks of Sennett's influence on American cinema.
