The French New Wave was terribly important to me and to Warren Beatty, who was the driving energy of the picture. We were seeing films like Breathless, and it was revolutionary. It broke all the rules and conventions that were so prevalent in American filmmaking.
It is, in a sense, a Rashomon effect. The whole question of truth is really one of how it's seen. History is not only written by the winners, but it's told by individuals, and it's perceived by individuals, and therefore it's always partial.
