I developed that in the '60s when I was looking at Godard and all those guys. I was doing a lot of those split screens in my experimental films, which led to a lot of the split screens that I did in Sisters and Carrie.
I loved that sequence [the Odessa Steps in Battleship Potemkin]... I would take that sequence and basically set it in a train station.
