Children of Men was a big reference for us, in terms of the hand-held camera work, the documentary feel. We wanted to make the movie feel very, very grounded and very raw.
We looked at a lot of French films from that period, the sort of poetic realism. We looked at films like Les Enfants du Paradis, Le Quai des Brumes, and even later stuff, like Le Samouraï for the mood.
