On October 8 1963, a young actor named Dennis Hopper attended the first retrospective at the Pasadena Art Museum in California for the French artist Marcel Duchamp. I was very influenced by Jean-Luc Godard's work, his mixing of documentary and fiction, and by what Bergman did in Persona with blurring reality and illusion.
I wanted to make a film noir that was in the tradition of some of the French films I love, like Godard's 'Breathless,' but set in the South.
