Korine references films like Federico Fellini's 'La Strada,' Rainer Werner Fassbinder's 'The Marriage of Maria Braun,' and Werner Herzog's 'Stroszek' as key influences, but more than any individual film, it's a sensibility that ties 'Mister Lonely' to its predecessors.
I was thinking of films like Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew, or Bresson's Mouchette. Not directly, but films that have a certain power, an almost documentarian feel, where you're just following characters for a long time.
The first time I saw 'Even Dwarfs Started Small' when I was a kid... it was mind-blowing... it just made me want to make movies.
I wanted it to feel like Aguirre, the Wrath of God meets a Britney Spears video.
