I knew I wanted to do a prison picture, and I think that 'A Man Escaped' is one of the greatest films ever made. Bresson is a huge influence, but I'm not attempting to be Bresson in any way.
A film that focuses on a minimal day, where not much occurs, but still leaves a very strong impression on the audience. I appreciate that type of approach, and I think it may be what you're referring to as the 'slice of life' approach.
I've been fascinated with Godard's Histoire(s) du cinéma as a kind of example of how non-linear historical film documents don't have to be narratives. They can be a collage, a poem, a fugue.
