Richard Linklater (/ˈlɪŋkleɪtər/; born July 30, 1960) is an American filmmaker. He is known for making films that deal thematically with suburban culture and the effects of the passage of time. For this film especially, I was more into the European tradition of Buñuel, Bergman, Fassbinder, films like Persona and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.
I just always loved this film genre. Call them 'hangout films.' I Vitelloni is a great example. American Graffiti, of course. When I started making films, I always thought, 'Oh, I'm contributing to this genre.'
When I started doing 'Boyhood,' I thought of the 'Up' series, not as a filmic influence, but as a conceptual influence. They shoot every seven years; I wanted to do it annually.
You see the Antoine Doinel films and you watch him grow up. You start with The 400 Blows, then it's Stolen Kisses, then Bed and Board, then Love on the Run. And it's like, 'Oh, this is an interesting way to follow a character.'
