We looked at a lot of Kurosawa films, like 'Seven Samurai', to understand how he choreographed battle scenes. We wanted the audience to always know where they were, what was at stake, and how the characters felt.
I used to watch Italian neorealist films like Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief and think, 'What a struggle that poor man goes through.' I put some of that struggle into Peter Parker.
