Breathless was really a very inspiring film. The sheer freedom of it and the energy and the directness of it did open one's eyes to a whole lot of things.
I wanted to make a film that was a totally subjective view of America, but also a satire of death and the American way of life, with a style that was free, almost improvisatory, like some of the European new wave films, but pushed to an extreme.
