Films like Macunaíma and Vidas Secas (Dry Lives) were huge for him. ‘They were talking about my country, my people,’ he says. ‘It was very powerful. And I still feel that. My films are not quite the same, but the spirit of social observation and trying to understand Brazil is there.’
