My favorite Bava is probably Hercules in the Haunted World [Ercole al centro della Terra]. It’s an amazing movie that really shows what Bava was doing with lighting. He was doing things with light that you would never see anywhere else. He was like an abstract painter with a camera. When I started shooting my movies, I felt he liberated me because he didn’t care about logic.
